Here's a number of indie stores I am aware of that are NOT GC related.

zzounds.com
interstatemusic.com
nstuffmusic.com
sweetwater.com

All of these guys sell online.

Fortunately, with the power of the Internet,  I was able to find a number of nice indie dealers to work with.  There's some pretty strong indie stores out there,  don't give up hope!

Online buying is fine,  but check first,  since Guitar Center owns at least 4 major online shops.

Sounds about right.  I've ended up fixing some GC messes in our shop here.   Sam Ash is kind of a drive from where I am,  but I don't really have too much bad to say about them.    Most of the time,  I'm at our indie shops around the city.

We had a few great indie stores...  one had  Gibson/Epiphone and Vox.   The other was a drum shop with Ludwig, Tama, Zildjian, etc.   It's truly possible to exist.

Unfortunately,  those owners are retiring,  so the future is unknown for their shops...  the drum shop sold out to a dealer a bit further away that is also a drum specialist.   Great indie stores do exist,  but you need to hunt around a bit.   Many times it's worth the drive.

I wanted a Ric bass,  and I ended up finding an indie dealer a state over...  so I went that route.   Nothing beats a good indie shop...   a few we have really close to home are indeed "junk shops".... but I still support them for the small stuff.

That's weird...  My new Gibsons and my Gretsch all use that truss tool.   I got one with each of those guitars.   I'd suggest looking for a local shop that does repair/setups... they are bound to have one.

Go ahead and voice your opinion.

Thanks to everyone who keeps this board going.  It's almost 10 years old!

I haven't been to a GC in a long while.   I did stop at a Sam Ash to look around awhile back.   Although I can't say that Sam's is a great store,  it does appear to have the trust of some of the smaller indie manufacturers.   This means that Sam Ash pays for their inventory.  Guitar Center is losing too many vendors.   GC Lost RIC, and Mesa... that I know about.... and rumor was that Beringer wanted out.

Good luck to you boss.   The guitar tech I associate with is independent, and is authorized by Gibson/Epi as well as a few other major makers.   That may be the ticket to get warranty repairs...  It pays so-so..  BUT it puts people in front of you that may entrust you with their bigger projects.

Similar BS from a retail job I once had.  Once you figure out how to work within a given commission structure, they pull the rug out and re-build it.

It's usual corporate BS...  I've had charge machine issues in my biz,  but you need to make it right as soon as possible.

I experienced that at another chain.  More responsibility,  less pay.  Sucks.

Thanks for sharing dude...

I've known some very qualified instructors... and one of them isn't me.   I've taken on a few friend's kids... showed them a few chords, and a few easy tunes.......and I honestly tell them I'm a hack who can hold my own in a garage band.

If one wants to be a musician,  Guitar Center is never the place to start.

Rule #1   Don't buy crap instruments.    If you really want to play,  get a something decent.
Rule #2   Find a real instructor if you're serious.  If you want to be a hack,  YouTube is a fun resource.
Rule #3   Learn how to take care of your instrument...or sell it to the pawn shop when it's "broken"  so I can fix it and make a profit.
Rule #4   Find a REAL guitar technician...  consult your guitar maker and use your best judgement.  If you followed rule #3,  you'll know if you're being  BS'ed in this category.

I am always leery of mail order anything.... within reason.   I don't have a good source for Rickenbacker within an 1-2 hour drive from me.. other than a SamAsh that may or may not have any in the store at all.

So recently I bought a Ric from 1 state away...  an Indie dealer that carried decent stock,  and communicated well.   My instrument arrived safely and ready to rock.

Many indie dealers care.  It's about repeat business.   Even though these guys are 1 state away,  I may very well drive out and visit them sometime.  It'd take me a few hours,  but why not... they were really cool to deal with.
