Independent Musicians Take On Corporate Giants,
Launch Protest at Upcoming NAMM Show
Michelle Mangione and Steve Soest, two independent musicians from California, launched a protest against Guitar Center and KMC Music/Gibraltar Hardware at the 2014 National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) Show, on Wednesday, January 22. They will continue the protest on Saturday, January 25.
This week, Musicians and Rock and Roll Hall of Famers Including Grace Slick, Joe Butler and Exene Cervenka have all voiced their support.
Mangione and Soest filed a lawsuit against the companies last year, claiming the companies stole their innovative product design idea and profited from it.
In 2011, Mangione and Soest designed a forward-facing pedal for use with the popular box-drum known as a cajon.
The pair presented the product to Mark Nelson, then VP Merchandise Drums and Percussion at Guitar Center. Calling the pedal design an “innovative product,” Nelson encouraged a colleague at Gibraltar Hardware (owned by KMC), Ken Fredenberg, to consider incorporating the design into the Gibraltar line of products. The idea was then introduced to Gibraltar.
One year later Gibraltar introduced the “Gibraltar Cajon Pedal” for sale around the world, without the knowledge of Mangione or Soest. The product went on to win the Best in Show award at the 2013 NAMM Show in Anaheim.
To date, Guitar Center and KMC have denied any wrongdoing.
“They took advantage of a unique idea that we presented to them in good faith, and then they ran away with it and took all the credit,” said Soest, a product designer and consultant to major music manufacturers for 40 years.
“We have repeatedly asked for proof of their ‘prior and independent’ development of the pedal as they claim,” Mangione said. “They have yet to come up with any such evidence. Instead they are hammering us on legal technicalities in hopes of having the case dismissed on procedural grounds.”

I pulled in 40k last year being a salesman at Guitar Center.

As I've said before,...

Your forum is very amusing. It's lack of followers and popularity shows it's uselessness.

Not to mention the millions of people that think otherwise.

You, sad, poor, man.

Take care,

You'll find a real hobby some day.

This guy is so full of it and of himself. Pleeeeasseee... 40K??? at Guitar Center!! HAHAHA!!! Thanks for the laugh. He must be the Rep for the ID 10 T club.

Gibraltar/Kaman  stealing ideas is nothing new.   I know a maker of Cymbal mounts that were taken to a show,  and showed up as a Gibraltar product the next year.   I hate that you HAVE to be so secretive on your product.

His Cymbal mounts are Machined here in the USA.. and are made of good aluminum.   The copies are pot metal.
